The Geography of Hong Kong Gambling - An Introduction to Sample Sizes and Income Distribution

There are a huge number of casinos in Macao which cater to all sorts of different kinds of gamblers, whether they be dressed up or down, and whatever style of casino you favour. Hong Kong is happy to allow the game to go on, as China is aware that most visitors come to Macao just for the gambling. The main thing to remember about Macau though, is that gambling is against the law, even for gambling purposes. Many Hong Kong gamblers find that they have fallen into the traps set out by some of the local tour operators, that are offering a free tour of the gambling venues, but then charging them entrance fees to do so. The problem with most of these types of tour operators is that they offer what is known as a "gambling pass", which basically means that the customer can basically come in for unlimited gaming for a one time fee. This obviously attracts a lot of tourists to visit the places offering the "free" gambling passes, but the real issue here is excessive gambling has brought about a huge rise in the amount of crime in Hong Kong.

A "gambling pass" is illegal in Hong Kong and should never be offered to an individual. There are many reasons why this particular type of pass is illegal. First off, the government feels that it is important that people are not encouraged to spend large amounts of money in the legal industry, because of the money laundering issues that could arise. Another reason these passes are illegal is because the government does not support any form of promotion or advertisement for illegal gambling operators. However, there have been a surprising amount of Hong Kong survey results that show that illegal operators are actually quite popular! So what exactly led to this discovery?

It seems that the popularity of illegal gambling in the territory may be tied to the fact that many of the customers visiting the city are in their twenties or even younger. Therefore, if you take a look at the demographics of Hong Kong gambling venues, you will see that it's predominantly middle-aged men who frequent the area. Interestingly, this age group tends to be more interested in online gambling than other types of gambling. In other words, they tend to prefer online betting over betting at a "bar" or casino.

So, this current study is beginning to show that the popularity of illegal gamblers in the territory is tied to the current age group that is visiting the sites. From this information, it is also revealed that these men tend to live relatively close to their local gambling venues. Also, it was found that the males in this age bracket tend to have disposable income, meaning that they are able to afford to travel to different locations to gamble. These men spend anywhere from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars every month. From this information alone, it is obvious that the area does attract this group of individuals.

The next phase of this research will be to follow up on these existing findings. It is hoped that by following up on the existing sample sizes, a clearer picture may become available as to whether or not the increasing number of illegal gamblers is actually indicative of a problem within the industry, or simply an isolated incident. It is important to remember though, that the sample sizes for these studies have traditionally been small, thus making it difficult to generalize the results from them. This is especially true when taking into consideration that the sampling has traditionally only involved Hong Kong Chinese, as well as those from Western countries.
